Enrolment # 304 at Penguin with the birthdate of 5 August 1917 by his father Albert, a mill-hand living at Cemetery Hill, Penguin, ¾ mile from school. Maurice was admitted on 20 July 1923 and attended for the last two terms of 1923 and 2 days in 1924 in Prep, then left in March 1924 ‘on account of age’. In July 1924 he was re-enrolled again and placed in Prep for the remainder of 1924 and the first two terms of 1925. He left in June 1925 with no reason stated. In October 1930 he was again re-enrolled at Penguin after previously attending Hampshire State School. Father Albert was now working as a labourer and living at Carmen Town, 1 ¼ mile from the school. For the remainder of 1930 and 1931 Maurice was in VI and in 1932 VII before leaving in June 1932 as he was over age.

Service number T18094, enlisting on 16 August 1940 at Penguin as a Private in 6th Military District Ambulance and Car section. Next of kin was listed as Albert, his father. He was a single farm labourer with black hair and blue eyes .He was granted leave 10 April 1941 to 13 April 1941, 2 Sept 1941 to 30 Sept 1941 and then granted exemption from training 1 October 1941 to 31 December 1941. On 24 December 1941 he suffered from a fractured tibia and fibula and was hospitalised. He had been on duty at the time so a Court of Enquiry was assembled. He did not return to duty until April 1942. On 29 November 1942 he was discharged as having a Reserved Occupation ( ‘Farm Work for G.L. Robson’).
