About us

South Riana is a small rural community 20kms south of Penguin, Tasmania, Australia.

There is a corner shop which sells most things from groceries and newspapers to hardware and petrol; it is also the local post office and the unofficial information centre.  The only other building is the Memorial Hall built in 1943 to honour the veterans of World War I and World War II.  Inside the hall hang two honour boards dedicated to each world war, and rows of historic photographs line a southern wall to remind visitors of South Riana’s European pioneering past.

The rest of the South Riana district is made up of rolling hills with rich soil on which dairy farms and crop farms thrive.  Alongside the Memorial Hall is the recreation ground with its distinctive Memorial Gates and Memorial Wall which were designed and erected in 1954. On the pillars of these gates are inscribed the names of the four men from South Riana, two from each world war, who made the supreme sacrifice.

The hall has hosted many different activities since it was built from country dancing, concerts, weddings and funerals to name a few and is available for hire.  For details see the Facebook page South Riana Memorial Hall Tasmania.

Despite its size, or perhaps because of it, South Riana is a warm and vibrant community.
