Admitted on 8 September 1924 by his father Harvey Francis Ling, farmer of Nietta, but was living with his grandparents at South Riana who were 2 ½ miles from the school. He left Nietta on 5 September 1924 continuing at South Riana State School until 30 October 1924 when he returned to Nietta School.

Military Records

Service number TX5397, Private, HQ 1 Aust Corps. He enlisted at Burnie on 14 Myay 1941, giving his next of kin as his wife Florence Ling of King Edward St . Penguin. He was almost 29 when he enlisted , and was 5’8 ½” tall, with brown eyes, dark complexion and dark hair. He trained as a Cook., attending Cookin School while in Brighton.Served in PNG 29 October 1943 – 8 May 1944, NEI 8 April 1945 – 29 November 1946. In total he served in the AIF for 1681 days, 918 in Australia and 427 Overseas. While in PNG he contracted dengue fever and in Queensland malaria.
